Illuminating a home is a great way to inject your style and personal taste into a room. As most rooms require more than one lighting fixture to be able to create adequate lighting for the available space, you’ve got a lot of opportunities to play around with your fixtures!

If you're feeling overwhelmed by all the lighting options available, here are our simple tips to helping you mix
and match lighting fixtures like a pro!

Do think outside the box

Decorating is all about having fun! Don’t be afraid to experiment and to go out of your comfort zone. While we often associate lighting with overhead lighting, there are a ton of stunning table and floor lighting options available in the market that will instantly upgrade any room you put them in. Don’t overlook these style opportunities!

Don’t judge solely on aesthetics

Don’t forget, though – function over form. Don’t sacrifice efficiency for aesthetics. First determine what kind of lighting you need for your space and then choose the features which serve that purpose and suit your style.

Do create a focal point

Find a piece that you love in your room and make it the star! It doesn’t have to be just the chandelier or a piece of art. Interesting table lamps or a unique centrepiece also make great focal points.

Don’t distract from it

With so many great lighting options available, it can be difficult to resist adding them all to your home! Resist the temptation to incorporate too many lighting features in your home as this can both distract from your focal point and make your home look cluttered.

Do use features that share a common trait

An easy tip to remember when mixing and matching features is to use ones which have similar features. They could have the same finish (aluminum, copper, gold, etc.), same pattern, shape, material or even come from the same style (modern, country, rustic). This is a great way to create harmony in your home without it being too matchy matchy.

Check out these brass lamps. While not identical, they are similar enough to create a cohesive look.

Or these ones with an art deco feel.

Don’t use pieces from the same collection

When you find a piece and design you love, we know it can be difficult to resist buying the entire collection. Be careful, though. Doing so creates monotony and makes for a dull and uninteresting room. If you absolutely must have both pieces (for instance a chandelier and pendant light from the same collection and of the same design), find a different room where each piece can shine on its own.

We hope you enjoy mixing and matching lighting features as much as we do! Let us know how you style our pieces. Don’t forget to tag us in your photos @onlinelighting or #OnlineLighting!
