Halogen globes use a tungsten filament similar to incandescent globes, but are filled with a small amount of halogen gas to enhance efficiency and prolong the bulb's lifespan. One of the benefits of using halogen light bulbs is their ability to produce a clear and focused light that closely resembles natural daylight, making them a great choice for task lighting in areas such as kitchens and offices.
In addition to their exceptional light quality, halogen light bulbs are compact in size and compatible with various lighting fixtures. They’re commonly used in track lighting, pendant lights and recessed fixtures, providing flexibility in design and placement. Halogen globes also come in different shapes, wattages and types, including halogen downlight globes and other varieties.
Remove the existing globe once it has cooled and check the letters or numbers printed on the base. These may identify its wattage, voltage and cap type. You should also compare its dimensions with the product listing. For downlights, confirm the diameter and connection before placing an order.
Many halogen bulbs can be dimmed, but the components must be compatible with one another. Older transformers may also affect the operation of low-voltage lighting. Review the product description and the specifications of your current system before buying.
An LED alternative may be available, but compatibility needs to be checked carefully. The replacement must have the right cap, voltage and dimensions for the fitting. Low-voltage downlights may also rely on an existing transformer that doesn't work correctly with every LED product. Compare the specifications before changing bulb types.
